(AP) – In a ruling likely to be thinly applied the regon Supreme Court has decided that weight loss surgery is covered by state workers’ compensation insurance in limited situations. The unanimous ruling Thursday affirmed an regon Court of Appeals decision ordering SAIF Corp. to pay for the surgery but on different grounds. Edward Sprague developed arthritis in a knee he injured on the job in 1976. His doctor recommended gastric bypass surgery to help Sprague lose weight before his knee replacement surgery to ensure the operation would be effective.

Folks are getting a lot of mixed messages about exercise these days. Some studies say just 20 minutes a day of moderate exercise is fine while others say people need an hour of vigorous exercise most days of the week. Few people dispute that exercise is a critical component of healthy living. But how much is needed and what kind of exercise is best varies from person to person and depends on what kind of health benefits are being sought. Exercise for healthJust a 10- or 20-minute walk at a “brisk” pace – think about how fast you’d walk if you were running late to work – can have an immediate effect on how the body processes insulin which is helpful to people with diabetes. But to see real benefits diabetics should walk a couple times a day every day of the week.
