HOUSE CALL WITH DR. SANJAY GUPTA
CNN International – Apr 5, 2008
(COMMERCIAL BREAK) GUPTA: We’re back with HOUSE CALL. Sharon Twitchell is using her computer in her battle against weight gain and all the health problems that can come with it, but can it help her lose the 100 pounds necessary to return to a healthy weight? By all accounts, Sharon Twitchell lived a quiet suburban life, but she had a darker side. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) SHARON TWITCHELL, WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS: I would find any reason to eat. And I would do a load of laundry and reward myself for doing a load of laundry. I had stashes in the house hidden away. And I was doing basically the same thing that an alcoholic does. GUPTA: Frightened by her actions, she decided to seek help… GUPTA: She was diligent in recording everything she ate as part of the Weight Watchers regimen, and began exercising six times a week. She never set foot at a meeting. Now more than 100 pounds lighter, Sharon says her weight loss has completely changed her life and her marriage. TWITCHELL: My husband went out and bought a new diamond wedding band for me. And as he slipped it on my finger, he said this is a renewal of our vows. I mean, we had a partnership for about 15 years.
‘I am starting to lose my double chin’
BBC News – Apr 5, 2008
Although her weight loss has been small, just over 7lbs (3. 1kg), she has dramatically changed her shape by hours of rigorous training in the gym. “My double chin is going and my hips are slimming down,” she said. “Now you are starting to see more of my pear shape and I can wear nicer clothes. “I went to a ball the other week and wore a lovely gown and I looked quite slim in it… ”
Seeing results
Deanne said that both she and her daughter thought the way the scheme was structured would maximise Lizzie’s chances of making lasting, sustainable changes. The emphasis is not on a quick fix producing dramatic results, but on gradual change that stand more chance of being incorporated into everyday life. “Everybody wants a massive weight loss, but this is not that,” she said.

Pole on pole in Bahrain
NEWS.com.au – Apr 5, 2008
Kubica, who had a miraculous escape from a dreadful crash in the Canadian Grand Prix last year, said he had a very difficult car claiming pole. He added the achievement was partly due to a pre-season fitness and weight-loss campaign which saw him lose six kilos. "I am fitter,” he said. "But it is difficult to say if it is just the lighter driver. I think if I am lighter, I go quicker. So, I decided with the engineer to reduce weight from the car, and from myself, and this is the result.

er, did they know they were sending it to New Scientist? “The Metabolizer is a new, pain-free way to shed those extra pounds,” they write, “without the health risks from methods like smoking, caffeine pills, and crash diets. ” So what does it do? “This is the first and only hand-held device that actually uses brain waves to help you lose weight safely. Next is a sciency bit, of course: “The Metabolizer taps into the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, and speeds up your metabolism to help you lose weight with the touch of a dial. It works simply by adjusting the dial and placing the device on your temple for 1 minute, twice a day. There is no clue there about how the Metabolizer could affect your hypothalamus, which is close to the centre of your head.

Netball: Long wait over for Davu
New Zealand Herald – Apr 5, 2008
The national body initially ruled Davu was not up to the standard required for the ANZ Championship based on her performances for Fiji at the last World Championships, where she was a player-coach. Davu endured stinging criticism for being overweight and unfit for the tournament, where she failed to make an impact for the injury-hit Fijians. But now the face of weight-loss company Jenny Craig, Davu has shed a great deal of weight and is determined to get back in the shape required to play top-level netball. Davu said yesterday it had been a long hard slog to get herself ready for elite competition and she was not entirely there yet. The formidable defender won’t put a figure on the amount of weight she has lost, but estimates her fitness to be at about 75 per cent and hopes to be back at her peak mid-way through the season. But, she points out, she is in better shape than when playing for the Force in last year’s National Bank Cup. “It has been hard but I’m just glad I was allowed to play and it is up to me to get ready to get out on court and produce the goods.
Body typing is unproven science
Toronto Star – Apr 5, 2008
CLAIM: Using what he calls a revolutionary approach to dieting, D’Adamo identified six genotypes that comprise humanity. Each of us fits into a specific genotype ? hunter, gatherer, teacher, explorer, warrior or nomad ? and should be following a type-specific diet and lifestyle plan to optimize our genetic potential. That is, to maximize health and wellness, boost weight loss, slow the aging process and prevent or reverse disease. PROGRAM: D’Adamo has come up with a genotype calculator that uses various body characteristics, including fingerprints, leg length and head shape, to help dieters work out their specific type. Gatherers (my type), for example, will learn they possess "nature’s ultimate survival strategy" with a thrifty body type, making them vulnerable to packing on pounds in our modern, overabundant food environment. A Gatherer should stick to a high-protein, low-glycemic diet to boost muscle mass and decrease body fat. D’Adamo has created lists of superfoods and toxic foods for each type and has specific exercise and supplement recommendations.

Birmingham hadrebranded Christmas as Winterval. In Surrey, a primary school head teacher had forced children tosing a reggae-themed Twelve Days of Christmas, with “sixgeese-a-laying” replaced by “six limbo dancers”, and the partridgegetting axed in favour of a “cornbird in a palm tree”.
